This new age of quarantine has brought many changes. Going to a doctor’s appointment is no exception. No longer are family members allowed to accompany the sick unless they are a child or unable to walk by themselves. Instead we’re asked to wait in our cars in the parking garage. So it is that I find myself in my car, surrounded by others locked up in their cars with the motor idling, the air conditioner running, and the radio blaring. Can this really be the dream we want?

Separation of family members in such circumstances is wrong. There have been several reports of long-married couples being denied the opportunity to be together as one approaches death. That’s cruel, and wrong.

We’re out of balance. No rule or law can weigh common good against compassion and decency. They can coexist but it requires a fully awake and aware human being who can apply mind and heart to the each separate issue. This binary idolatry of sameness regardless of circumstances is less than human.
