In the short time I paid heed,
I met with great instruction. – Sir 51:16
gathering the crop today
remember those whom yesterday
plowed the ground and planted the seeds
which yield today’s harvest
throw a great feast and rejoice
give thanks and praise to providence
then return to the task at hand
plowing fields and planting seeds
Of others no memory remains,
for when they perished, they perished,
As if they had never lived,
they and their children after them. – Sir 44:9
to live and to die
every one in due time
each precious to God
long before the rain
thunder rumbling in the dark
nature’s morning chant
Give new signs and work new wonders; – Sir 36:6
“Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.
For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mk 10:43-45
when i was a child of little faith
i asked for signs and works of wonder
you obliged with a world full of splendor
my life brims with the signs of your love
you were the god of my making
then you came and called me your own
while i sat enthralled at your feet
you taught me to love and to serve
you performed many signs of wonder
yet when i asked you to perform
only one sign to save your life
you refused and gave up your life
what kind of a god dies?
what kind of a god serves?
are you not a god of my making?
performing signs to prop up my little faith
or am i a wonder of your making?
created in your image and likeness
endowed with intellect to know
wisdom to understand
courage to love
free will to choose
to serve or be served
to follow or be followed
but you are a god hard to follow
you are not a god of my making
Offer to God praise as your sacrifice
and fulfill your vows to the Most High. – Ps 50:14
oh Spirit that remains
let my vows not be empty
let my words not ring hollow
let my deeds not bring me shame
let my sacrifice be unconditional
let my surrender be complete
let my life sing your praises
let my love bring you glory
let my days be ordinary
let your Spirit forth
