branch not quite fallen
held up by crook in the neck
dangling in the breeze

can you tell what’s real
and what’s just a reflection
true depth lies beneath

days after the ice
the glory of what remains
showing “life goes on”

without much fanfare
our seasonal friends are gone
shadows grow longer
Author’s Note: This photograph was taken on September 22, the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. It was the last time I sighted a hummingbird this year. See you next spring, hummers.

This was a very fortuitous find as there was a 24-hr endurance trail bike race at this park where we walk. We showed up for our weekly walk as they were packing up to leave. Around the back side between a residential addition and the park, we happened upon this guy – waiting patiently for the invaders to leave his territory. On a personal note this is the first time I’ve seen a buck at this park. His harem and progeny abound so we knew he had to be around somewhere. Well here he is!
