2015.08.07: the way of the cross

Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? – Mt 16:24-26

the cross marks the spot
where heaven meets earth
before you lies the choice
power or the Truth
social status or the cross
the world or your life
the temptations of the desert

the cross represents
heaven and earth
divine and human
choice and chosen
freedom and obedience
come, lay down your life
pick up the cross and follow
Emmanuel, God with us
the way to the Father
the way of the cross
the way, the truth, and the life

2015.07.14: the human experience, too

Jesus began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented. – Mt 11:20

like stars fallen from above
we’ve forgotten our true nature
we’ve all done things we regret
we’ve hurt each other
with what we failed to do

repent repent repent
the Kingdom of God is here
he came to remind us
that we are children of God
and show us the way back

but the choice remains ours
to embrace our true nature
fallen and risen
darkness and light
human and divine

or die

2015.04.03: long before … in a garden

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” Jn 19:22

long before the arrogant words
humility was spoken in a garden

long before the unjust sentence
a yoke was freely accepted in a garden

long before the jeers of rejection
a choice was freely made in a garden

long before Peter’s denials
love poured out unconditionally in a garden

long before Judas’s betrayal
a father abandoned his son in a garden

long before this act of obedience
disobedience arose in another garden
