even a just God
won’t claim the fields he planted
when the grape grows wild

voices of the oppressed cry
one nation under God, not

framed by two branches
the sun hides behind a leaf
open and shut case

we all see what we believe
even if it’s not the truth

our lives are too short
will any of this matters
in a million years

the only thing that remains
the Truth that is here and now

late summer deluge
the grasses turn green again
but not on fresh graves

the nature of love and death
known but not well accepted
